Sunline Calla Lily Surprise

Updated: Oct 9, 2020

It's true, I am working on my popular enameled Calla Lilies again, and I am hoping that they will delight as they have in the past.

But why Calla's? Well, you gotta love the shape, the variety of colours and what they represent. Nature, beauty, and elegance, but it turns out that they are popular flowers for other reasons, and I was surprised to see how many meanings are associated with this lovely little flower.

According to the Calla Lily Guide (www.callalilluguide.com):

"The calla lily is associated with magnificent beauty, purity, and with beginnings and endings. The most common usages of the flower are for weddings and for funerals. The white calla lily has come to be symbolic of marriage and purity both for the color and shape of the flower, thought to echo the pleasing characteristics of a woman's form. The calla lily has also been widely regarded as a symbol of rebirth and resurrection. "

Jan, a member of our Dream Team Art Club (you will hear more about them later!) informed me that the Calla Lily is named after the Greek word for beautiful — calla. It is associated with the Greek goddess Hera...very cool!

Here's the legend: " Zeus brought Hercules, his son from another women, to Hera, his wife, while she was asleep to drink her milk. When she woke up she pushed him away and drops of milk flew across the sky to create the milky way. The ones that fell on the ground grew into beautiful lilies.

When Venus, goddess of love, beauty, and desire, saw the lilies she was jealous of their beauty. She cursed their beauty by placing a large yellow pistil in the middle of the flowers. Because of this story, some associate the calla lily with Venus and thus with lust and sexuality." (www.ftd.com).

So what do the Sunline Metalz Calla Lilies represent? I think I will leave that open for interpretation...stay tuned, they will be posted soon.
